There are two next to the lens, another pair on the top plate and on the back next to the viewfinder. The controls are quite flexible: unmarked function buttons have default functions, but you can swap them for others. Everything included on the body serves a purpose, a nod to the Bauhaus philosophy which is deeply embedded in Leica's DNA form follows function. The Leica red dot logo is there, but that is really it. The SL2-S design language is clean, with distinct lines, just a few buttons, and little equipment.

I have tried the camera with both types and found it to go well with an autofocus zoom, the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm F2.8 ASPH., Manual focus, on Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm F0.95 in L mount, and a M rangefinder lens, the SummicronC 40mm F2. The SL2-S works with data L-mount lenses native, and can use Leica M rangefinder lenses with an adapter. This adds a certain confidence to the grip, especially important when holding the camera in your hand. The camera is protected from dust and splashes - its IP54 rating means you can use it in the rain without worry when paired with a protected lens. Leica uses a chassis made of magnesium alloy to help keep things light and sturdy, matched with an anodized aluminum top plate.

It is sized to match other full frame models, at 4.2 x 5.7 x 3.3 inches (HWD), and weighs a very reasonable two pounds without a lens. I'm a fan of the somewhat understated look of the SL2-S, although it doesn't match as well with the vintage analog camera s that inspired sounddesign. There are a few cosmetic changes here and there (the printed SL2 logo is painted white, while it stays black with the SL2-S), but both look, feel, and function the same. The SL2 is designed for high resolution imaging, using a full frame 47 MP sensor compared to the 24 MP of the SL2-S. The SL2-S shares its body design with the SL2, a 2019 version.
It costs more than traditional alternatives, like our Editor's Choice winner, the Panasonic Lumix S5, but there's no doubt where your money's going: the SL2-S offers a true luxury experience. Its SL2-S ($ 4,995, body only) offers modern conveniences you don't get with a M10, including intelligent autofocus system and 4K video recording, and bundles it together in a beautiful all-weather case. Leica 's SL cameras are a bit more classic in design than its iconic M range finder line, but neither sacrifice quality of materials and attention to detail that have consolidated the position of the company as a premium brand.
